Aviva is one of the country’s largest insurers and they also have a large vision for their corporate social responsibility. They believe that “to be a good Canadian business means being a good citizen too.” AvivaGives is their employee volunteer and giving program that supports employees’ efforts to give back.

Aviva’s 2019 5K Foam Fest team, “Keeping Up with Kommunications”, was spearheaded by Jennifer Shah, Chief Communications Officer. Jennifer currently sits on the Corporate Cabinet and is a volunteer for Make-A-Wish®. She encouraged her colleagues to participate in this fun team-building activity to support the community they serve. Aviva has eight employees who are all fundraising and taking on this exciting challenge.  Headed by captain Liz Wood the team includes, Kristen Burrows, Sukriti Dahiya, Tina Kenny, Melanie Raffa, Jennifer Shah, Laura Wilson, and Priscilla Wong. We had a chance to catch up with Kristen Burrows about why they wanted to participate in the event and support Make-A-Wish.

Tell me how you got involved with the 5K Foam Fest?

I just joined Aviva this past May and one of my coworkers jumped on me to join the team. I had done a lot of charity work with my last organization and so the opportunity aligned perfectly with getting to know the team better and continuing to help my community.

What inspires you about Make-A-Wish and the work we do?

As a sister, I’ve watched my brother go through cancer. Thankfully he has beat it, but we didn’t do it alone. It’s an experience that is made easier by the people who are there to give families hope and patience. Make-A-Wish gives that extra bit of support and hope that families need on some of their worst days.

What inspired you to create a fundraising page and how did you feel when you committed to raising funds in support of Make-A-Wish?

I always feel committed to helping charities in the runs and events I sign up for. I’m so lucky to be healthy, to work where I do, and have that extra bit to give so I make sure I do my best to help those who need it more than I do.

How did you feel when you quickly reached your fundraising goal and who did you ask to sponsor you?

I felt great! My family is always supportive, and friends will surprise you too. I find a lot of people are willing to give if you just put it out there.
